<w>Ištar</w></mentioned> — женское божество загробного мира. В первой части
может быть ос. <ref type="xr" target="#entry_bar"/> ‘право’, ‘власть’, и все
слово означает, стало быть, „наделенный властью Astær", „властитель Astær''; ср.
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">bar</hi>-<hi rendition="#rend_italic">dwag</hi> ‘дух-покровитель’, буквально „(имеющий) власть (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_bar"/>) дух (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">dwag</hi> из <ref type="xr" target="#entry_dawæg"/>). <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Bailey</hi> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_JRAS"/><biblScope>1954 I—II
32 сл.</biblScope></bibl>) возводит <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Barastær</hi> к <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e262" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e208" xml:lang="x-oldirn"><lang/>
<w>vāra-stura-</w></mentioned> „большое (<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e267" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e213" xml:lang="x-oldirn"><lang/>

препятствует дигорская форма <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Barastær</hi>, а также отсутствие диссимиляции
плавных: ожидали бы *<hi rendition="#rend_italic">Balastur</hi>. Объяснить последний факт можно только тем,

59, 123</biblScope></bibl> ) and further to <hi rendition="#rend_bold">Babylonian</hi> <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e192" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e246" xml:lang="akk"><lang/>
<w>Ištar</w></mentioned> — goddess of the underworld. There may be Ossetic
<ref type="xr" target="#entry_bar"/> right, power in the second part,
and the whole word, thus, means “powerful Astær”, “master Astær”; cf.
<hi rendition="#rend_italic">bar</hi>-<hi rendition="#rend_italic">dwag</hi> patron spirit, literally "(having) power (<ref type="xr" target="#entry_bar"/>) spirit (<hi rendition="#rend_italic">dwag</hi> from <ref type="xr" target="#entry_dawæg"/>). <hi rendition="#rend_smallcaps">Bailey</hi> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_JRAS"/><biblScope>1954 I—II 32ff.</biblScope></bibl>)
traces <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Barastær</hi> back to <mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e208" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e262" xml:lang="x-oldirn"><lang/>
<w>vāra-stura-</w></mentioned> “big (<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e213" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e267" xml:lang="x-oldirn"><lang/>
<w>stura-</w></mentioned>) enclosure (<mentioned corresp="#mentioned_d5684e218" xml:id="mentioned_d5684e272" xml:lang="x-oldirn"><lang/>
<w>vāra-</w></mentioned>)”. The Digor form <hi rendition="#rend_italic">Barastær</hi> prevents such an
explanation, apart from non-natural semantics. The other argument is the absence
of glide dissimilation: we would expect the form *<hi rendition="#rend_italic">Balastur</hi>. The latter fact
can only be explained by assuming that the common word <ref type="xr" target="#entry_bar"/> power was still construed as a separate
