The realtion between Old Indian consonant <c>čh</c> and Ossetic <c>s</c> is the same as
between the consonants of <mentioned xml:lang="inc-x-old"><lang/>
<w>čhāyā-</w>
<gloss><q>shadow</q></gloss></mentioned> and <ref type="xr" target="#entry_sajyn"/>
<gloss><q>deceive</q> etc.</gloss> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_Brugmann"/>
<biblScope>I 555, 558</biblScope></bibl>).<note type="footnote">The objections of
<name>Zubaty</name> against the correspondence of Old Indian <c>čh</c> to Iranian
<c>s</c> and, in particular, against the correspondence of <mentioned xml:lang="inc-x-old"><lang/>
<w>čhāga-</w></mentioned> to Ossetic <oRef/> (<bibl><ref type="bibl" target="#ref_KZ"/>
<biblScope>XXXI 20</biblScope></bibl>) are groundless.</note> Old Indian <c>čh</c>
goes back in all these cases, as a rule, to Indo-European <c>sḱ</c>. However in other
Indo-European languages one can't see reliable representatives of the reconstructed
Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="oos"><w type="rec">sḱago-</w> (<w type="rec">sḱogo-</w>)</mentioned>. It is possibly explained by taboo prohibitions, which are
common for the names of animals.<note type="footnote"><name>Georgiev</name> believes that
it is possible for <mentioned xml:lang="cu"><lang/>
<w>koza</w></mentioned> and also <mentioned xml:lang="sqj"><lang/>
<w>kec</w>
