<hi rendition="#rend_italic">b</hi> is the result of dissimilative vocalization (like <ref type="xr" target="#entry_bitʼna"/> ‘mint’ if from <hi rendition="#rend_italic">pʼitʼna</hi>). Under the influence of
|
||
the Gospel stories about Saint Peter's fishing, his image appeared in the
|
||
Christian tradition associated with the water element; he was considered, in
|
||
particular, the patron saint of sailors, etc. (<bibl><author>D.
|
||
Šestakov</author><biblScope xml:lang="en">Research of Greek folk saint
|
||
tales. 1910, pp. 55—56</biblScope></bibl>). This explains the fact that
|
||
the functions of the old pagan water deity were assigned to Saint Peter after
|
||
the Christianization of the Alans. In the same way they got their mythological
|
||
image of “St. George” (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_Wastyrǵi"/>), “St.
|
||
Elijah” (see <ref type="xr" target="#entry_Wacilla"/>), “Saints Florus and

||
